I wanted to know if Seagate has a 500 GB version of their 250 gig ‘raptors’. I’m very satisfied with mine.
Whats this 500 gigger called if it exists, and what’s the price?

i dont think seagate has a single platter 500gb hdd. the WD 500 gb drives are the most VFM selling around 5 - 5.2 k they make a awesome deal . seagate are a little expensive .
I think he’s talking of a 2 platter version of a 500GB HDD :). Actually, even I’m keen to know.
Seagate 7200.11 32MB cache is avl for 5.3k in Delhi, it scores around 84mbps in HDtach, Users reported that it faces firmware issue but its working fine in ma frens PC.
oh then prices have dropped recently .. last i checked seagate was 5.6 k. means WD might be around the 5k mark . though the seagate looks a faster drive.
Can u give the model # of the above…
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
I am waiting for this WD 640GB HDD - it has 2 platters of 320GB !!
Wheeee! Prices are down. A friend picked up the WD5000AAKS for 4.9K. Un-freakin-believable!!
^^yep sydras, wanted to know about the 250x2 platter model. Is that the 7200.11 series?
Guys wats this single platter and double platter.
Which is the 500GB Hdd to get now for 5~5.5K
[Was thinking of getting some more space]
Anything which is silent , long lasting , 5yrs warr , error free , min 60MB/s n SATA2
the platter is the physical entity on the hdd where the data is stored.
the fewer the platters.. the lesser the time that will be spent on seeking to data that might be stored over multiple platters. also.. when u have a single platter 250 gigger versus a double platter 250 gigger.. there will be higher data density on the single platter device. implying that the data transfer rate on a single platter device will be higher as compared to a dual platter device
the Seagate 7200.11 seems to be the best 500GB offering.

Actually, for lower capacities, it’s not so much about the platters as compared to the platter density. More GB/platter means faster read/write. This translates to much better performance…and we all know, the HDD is the biggest bottleneck in the system.
Until we can get SSDs, denser platters is all we can hope for .
for the same amount of space.. obviously the hdd wid lesser number of platters will have have higher platter density
So is there a single platter 500GB if not double platter 250GB/platter thingy.
Is segate the best 500GB what about others any offerings from hitachi , WD etc..
Also if ne one know the costs that might help.
The Seagate 500GB HDD that everyone wants is the one that will have 2 platters of 250GB/platter density. So, it will be a 2 platter HDD of 500 Gigabyte capacity.
Right now, only 250GB HDDs with this new platter are avbl i.e. the 250GB drive contains only 1 platter.
500GB/platter is still some time away I presume :).
what abt going thru this thread again
how many platters does the 5K Rs WD have , ne idea on the transfer rates.
So far Segate’s stats looks gr8.
the WD 500GB (WD5000AAKS) has 3 platters & gives 60-65MB/s
but 7200.11/ES.2 hard drives looses to WD in overall performance

The Seagate 500GB 7200.11 drives are seriously fast, picked 2 of these up for a NAS setup and I’m glad I did. Michael, you can’t go wrong with these 500GB drives.
@Udit, it’s just the Seagate 1TB 7200.11 drives that haven’t been topping benchmarks.
