8800GT Sli or 4870?

Hi,

You can see my rig in the signature below.

Now the Upgrade bug is around the corner.

I only want more FPS esp. in Crysis,

and Warhead, FarCry 2 when and as they come out.

What do you guys think is a better upgrade path for me considering my budget is about 15-18K max.

  1. Get a ATI4870 and sell off the 8800GT?

  2. Get a cheap AMD SLI mobo (even Used will do), and another 8800GT and SLI them, I might need another SMPS as well though.

  3. Go Intel and still use the 8800GT, but this wont really give me much FPS gain in my budget.

  4. Wait, time is money…the 4870x2 is around the corner, and I should wait for the newer games to come out…

Which of the above are the best options for me right now?

For some reason I am inclined towards 4 he he he…

Thanks.

NOTE: I realise 8800GT SLI will give me more FPS but it does come with its own set of issues.

better to go for hd 4850 crossfire…

option 1 after a month or two, till new prices reflect in India retail, if buying locally

wait for 15 days till 4870x2 is launched, wait a little more for price drops and then get the amd mobo+psu+2nd card, the most power combination will out do 4870 like anything.

Definitely 2x8800GT. Performance should be close to a GTX280 :).

Considering that you want to play the more recently released games at high FPS, why in the world would you still stick with your AMD? It’ll probably bottleneck your GPU’s performance. You’ll be better off selling it off and upgrading your processor and motherboard, as well as your graphic card.

U changed mind to get 4870 not my gtx 260 ? :stuck_out_tongue:

I know using an SLI setup with AMD X2 5200 is a huge bottleneck better get yourself a P45 and E7200 OC till 3.6GHZ …

LOL…no not really just weighing my options. Will meet you around independence day and lets see how it goes..

Even I am somehow leaning towards 8800GT SLI.
I cant afford to upgrade to intel as well as get another GT, unless I can get a half decent deal for this current AMD+Mobo.

Whats the cheapest SLI Intel mobo ? I think even a used 680i should be plenty for a 8800GT SLI? ..though the 750i is very tempting, so is everything else..I dont want to cross 16K please.

lol if u want 750i tell me , i want to upgrade to x48 , but single GTX 260 will be better than 8800GT SLI, as later on u will have option to add one more GTX260 , and in SLI it is same performance as 4870X2

In you case get an 8800GT now, and SLI. Then 4 months later get a 780i and E8500 and SLI on that platform. SLI is bottlenecked by an X2 to be sure.

If you already have an SLI mobo, then a second 8800GT + PSU would be the best option. 8800GT in SLI is better than 9800GX2 and GTX280 in most cases. In case you dont have an SLI mobo, HD4870 would be a better buy.

Still another thing to consider is that unlike for Intel Processors, SLI Mobo for AMD processors are a lot cheaper. So depending on the cost, you can afford to buy a new mobo for SLI.

Roboghost, I wish I was still staying in Bhopal.

Could have just traded a lot of hardware. now its either your 260 or the 750iFTW

After reading that the x2 will be a big bottleneck, I am inclined towards a bigger upgrade than just another 8800GT. which is sad, as I would like to run my AMD 5200x2+ till about early next year when the new intels are out…

So what do I do..?

How much a gain would I get in FPS and only FPS while going from a AMD 5200+ to an intel E8200? I don’t think these games are so scalable on a better procy. so only about 5 fps max? this is considering my GPU is a single 8800GT. Now when I do SLI I accept things can get different and then this procy might bottle neck. And then the intel would make a bigger difference of FPS.

“SLI Mobo for AMD processors are a lot cheaper. So depending on the cost, you can afford to buy a new mobo for SLI.”

Exactly!!!

So what to do? Hold tight and wait till far cry 2 and warhead, come out and then decide?

no gain unless you are gaming on 1280x1024 at medium settings,at higher res and settings 8800gt will be the bottleneck in crysis.
CPU scaling in games with dual & quad core processors
if you plan to go SLI do go for a quad core, even a phenom should do fine unless you love benchmark scores.

^^“unless you love benchmark scores.”

No I don’t care for them as long as I get 40+FPS in whatever I throw at it.

Trying benchmarks for the past 10 years and has gotten me nothing but getting broke and a bit of ego ;-). Now I prefer having only 40+FPS.

^^nice link.
