well i m sick of my XP & can’t go VISTA yet. so will be trying linux fer a while:D
which the best linux distro fer a noobie who knows nothing about prg except BASIC😄
i tried my hands at a ubuntu 6.10 but the setup hanged. so i gave up trying.
What video card are you using ? 8800’s won’t work with a lot of these distro’s without some extra tweaking. I know that Fedora 32 bit should install using standard built in vga driver on the 8800. But I don’t think any of the distro’s work with the 64 bit install on 8800, without non-noob tweaking, also none of the Livecd’s will work currently with 8800.
I have always found for myself, that Fedora has the easiest installation setup, and the support and scope of information is really good.
while installing ubuntu.
1.> Select lang = english , click forward.
2.> dont make any changes to the city , click forward.
3.> dont make changes to the kbd settings let it be us english , click forward
4.> now the partition manager , select manual or guided according to ur choice.
5.> now the setup wont hang further go ahead and follow the steps.
Who said 8800 won’t work in Linux it ran fine in my friend Ubuntu I installed.. Still he is having trouble in Linux  And coming to the topic don’t install anything less or higher than Ubuntu the easiest Linux that 1 can use.. Just give it a try and you won’t like going back to windows  :cool2: …

I’m not trying to be rude… but…since this thread is about the difficulty level of installing for a noob, I wanted to make sure that someone new to Linux would not run into a lot of problems
The 64 bit version of most distros and the livecd will not boot using the vesa driver. The Live cd will not work at all, the 64 bit versions have to be booted without starting xserver. The the kernel and the nvidia driver have to be updated from prompt before they will boot.
The 32 bit versions will boot, but are problematic, and again, you will only be using vesa driver… very slow.. so the first thing that needs to be done… is update nvidia driver. The standard nvidia driver… if installed will crash the system.. or it won’t boot, so if it is automatically installed by your distro because it detects an nvidia card, it has to be removed.
The ONLY driver that will work at the moment is 1.0-9755, NONE of the distros include this driver at the moment. If you have Fedora, there is a pre-packaged rpm on Livna… I don’t know about other distros… otherwise you have to compile the driver using the driver from nvidia…
