Canon Camera repairs

My Camera, a Canon Powershot A75, was purchased a couple of years ago in the States. So no warranty anymore.
In shooting mode, the display becomes blurred and streaky and it is impossible to make out the image you are shooting. When this problem first showed up, the camera would suddenly start working OK intermittently. As time passed the duration of the problem has increased. While earlier it would work most of the time and rarely have the problem, now it works very rarely or not at all. Images already in memory are displayed without a problem.
Need help to locate someone who is reliable and reasonable in repairing Canon digicams in Mumbai.

Buy a new one… it’ll end up being more expensive to repair than replace.

That’s right.. one of my Powershots had a lens jam in 05 - it cost me 3k to fix it. I got it fixed only because it was my first cam. The issue you’re experiencing could cost more to fix.

Do you really think so?

I considered that but a replacement would cost me perhaps about 6-8000/- depending on what I buy. Shouldn’t repairs be much cheaper?

Seems to be a problem with focus.

You can do one thing… find a Canon service center in Bombay and get them to look at it and estimate the cost of repairs. Make a decision to fix or buy new after that.

Thanks. I’ll do that.

Do they normally stick within estimate or does the amount keep inflating because they keep coming up with more problems later?

Well, give it to them to check what’s wrong… they might charge you a small service fee to determine what the problem is and give you an estimate. If you choose to get it repaired by them, you can ask them to waive the service fee.

I think you will better scrap it especially since 3.2MP cameras are no longer being sold. My Nikon Coolpix (5MP 8X Optical)bought 4 years back at a very high cost stopped working and when given to the repair centre, they said the CCD has to be replaced and it will set me back by 4.5K. I decided not to get it done. Repair in case of digicams is not worth due to the rapidly dropping prices and newer models with better technology and features. And there is no certainty regarding the life of the repaired one.

This is only my personal opinion and you can enquire at a reliable service centre and if it is a minor problem it may not cost much.

Just contacted the number from their website for service in Mumbai.

I am told they are open Monday to Friday 9 to 5:30.

So I’ll just have to wait till I am able to go there on a working day.

Just out of curiosity searched ebay.in for the particular model. No result, meaning not even a second hand piece is there for sale.

…because the A75 is an older (but good) model. I still use an A70 during travel, the same one that had a lens jam.

I did as Rio suggested and located the Canon Master Service centre as it is called. Went over to them and was told the charges would be 750/- for labour plus parts. Two days for an estimate and if I want to back out, they’ll charge me 225/- and return the camera as is.

When I called for an estimate two days later…

Canon: The camera is ready.

Me: What? You haven’t given me an estimate yet.

Canon: It is free sir.

Me: (sheepishly) OK

Now I was not sure if free meant no parts cost or what. Today I had the camera picked up. Free means total cost zero. This when the camera had been purchased 3 years ago in the states and had no warranty on it.

Three cheers for Canon service. Go buy Canon. Thanks Rio for the tip.

Give it to Canon Service center in Juhu or bandra dont know exactly where they will change the CCD free of cost even if u got it from US and even if it is out of warranty.

All sony CCD used in A60,A70,A75 were defective and are changed by Canon free of cost.

regards

Good to hear that man, you don’t need a new camera now

NEWS! - CCD failures: the bigger picture

Sony, Canon and Nikon Advise Users of Digital Camera Problems
there is a list right at the bottom of the affected camera models

i did not pick up this thread earlier.

i had somewhere mentioned this on this forum itself that last PA series models from canon have known ccd problems and canon india is servicing it free of cost irrespective of warranty, place of purchase.

Today only i got one of my friends a95 repaired free of cost.

Yes farookh and medpal. When I got my camera back, I checked the Jobsheet and found it was the CCD that was replaced. I then searched the net and found that this is an issue with certain models of camera manufactured between 2002 and 2004. Not just Canon but a few other makes too which used the same Sony CCD sensor.
