Connecting DVD Player and 5.1 Computer Speakers

Hi,

I am planning to buy a Home Theatre. My TV is Philips 29PT8836/94. My budget is 20K. I watch movies more than listening to music. Movies: Music – 90:10.

From the previous posts I assume Home Theatre bundles offered by Philips, LG, Samsung and Sony are not good. So I decided to purchase DVD player from Samsung/Philips and buy speakers from Logitech/Creative. Is it possible to PC speakers to these DVD players? If not is there any special DVD player available for this purpose?

DVD Player

  1. Philips DVP5965K/98
Philips Consumer Products - Product Details
  2. Samsung DVD-HD860
    SAMSUNG’s Digital World - Hype Vision | DVD-HD860

Speakers

  1. Creative G550W
Creative GigaWorks G550W - THX-certified 5.1 system with wireless rear speakers
  2. Logitech Z 5300
    Delta Peripherals
    Thanks,
    Sam

This applies to all PC 5.1 speakers, and DVD players which have the audio decoder and 5.1 outputs.

Hi zhopudey,

Thanks for the info. Just saw the “Hardware Recommendation Threads”.

I have two more questions on this
1)From what technical term I can understand a DVD player has audio decoder?
2)Will RCA to Mini cable cause degradation in audio quality? What is the approximate price of these cables?

Thanks
Sam

  1. It will either say something like that on the front, or you can check the back panel for a group of outputs labeled Front L/R, Center/Sub and Surround L/R. (or something similar)

  2. No noticeble degradation. They might cost 40-50 bucks each. Look around for MX brand cables.

You meant to say all 5.1 channel DVD player has in-built decoder?

those which have 5.1 channel outputs usually have em

Hi,

Yesterday, I bought Philips DVP5965 DVD Player. It does not come with a Component video cable so I used the provided 3 RCA cables (2 for composite audio and one for video) to connect the DVD player component video out to my TV. Although my TV can support 480p and 1080i, it is able to display pictures only in 480p resolution. When I turn of progressive scan in both devices my TV shows blue screen. Also I am not noticing any huge difference between component in and composite. Is any special cable needed for component video? Is component video supports only progressive scan?

Thanks,
Sam

The 3 RCA will not work properly for component video. Go buy a component cable, or at least 3 composite cables. And while connecting, ensure that red is connected to red, green2green and blue2blue.
DVDs will only show in 480i or 480p, unless you upsample them, but thats a different story, and your DVD player doesn’t have upsampling anyways.

And what are you doing for the audio?

I tried to buy Component Video Cable from a local electronics shop but they don’t know what Component Video is (of course I am staying out of city-Bangalore). So I bought 2 RCA cable and using it for audio. Is any brand popular for Component Video Cable? How much it will cost?

DVP5965 has upsampling functionality but unfortunately it is only for HDMI output. Is any adapter available to convert HDMI to Component Video?

buddy whats the price of Philips 29PT8836/94??? This is the one that comes with pixel plus right?

I got it for 23000(Bangalore), you can get cheaper if you bargain well. It comes with pixel plus 1. It is HD Ready but not HDTV.

Hi,

Try National market in magestic or supertronics in SP road for CVI cable. I got mine from National market. It costs 300 bucks. If you want a gold plated (24k) one it will cost you around 2000 bucks. I too 've the same model 29PT8836 TV with Philips 642k DVD player.

Deepak

Hi Deepak,

Is there any advantage of gold plated cables?

Thanks,
Samuel

Sam,

Some of the reviews say it does. Check out this link

gold plated connectors eliminate connection losses because

a) gold = best conductor

b)gold doesnt corrode, so the connectors remain the same

in addition, gold looks nice

Sam, How is the audio performance of your TV when connected with DVD player. I find mine to be very low.

Audio quality is ok but the sound is low. I have to set sound level to 40points for watching DVDs while for cable tv 20p is louder.

My settings
Sound Mode : streo and not spatial
Ultrabass: on

Thanks Sam, Even same with me. I can hear if I set it to 100 points without any loud noice. With my old Philips DVD audio was good even with 10 points. May be I need to go for a home theatre.

Guys, Can you guide me on the home theatre system. I’ve finalized Sony DZ120k & Philips HT3105 models. Any inputs on pros & cons?

Thanks in advance
