Is there a solution? Know any organisation in India who would do something? Really something cos I got anti- corruption brigades here who don’t mind being corrupted themselves. Just asking cos I don’t mind it (corruption). I just don’t like it.
I have a very strong point of view about this topic, so I won’t express it here.
The fact is that it’s not possible to get rid of it, as long as human society exists in its present form.
And in India, the only thing that can be done is to drive it a under a veil. It’s too open right now.
Corruption is not just bribes - I’ve seen plenty cases right here on TE which point to corrupt members. And flagging them down usually results in the flagger being accused of ‘preaching’, or something similar.
Piracy and illegal downloading are also corruption. Taking things that you didn’t earn. Oops, that means almost all of TE is corrupt too!!!
Any votes for ‘EOTM’, hit me.
EOTM = Expulsion of the month
I’m trying to talk about real corruption here. The kind where ppl are losing food, education and security stuff. Not of some company losing revenue ( I try to buy most of the software I use).
Is there really anything an individual can do do about corruption and this there any group that can help an individual in the endeavor? Or are we really doomed to co-exist with it? One reason I ask is cos I profit from corruption all the time. Only sometimes, I get these feelings of guilt…
Edit: Open to PMs or e-mails regarding concrete steps to curb corruption and info about pro-active organisations which anyone knows personally to be sincere.

nice initiative there but it might not work out entirely. if you want to enforce a major change in the system (corruption system) you have to be flawless first, the only thing you can aim is use the system and change its perspective but then again this can only be acheived at individual level and not at organization level for a simple reason tht it will be crushed and no one can do anything bout it
ps: +1 to sangrams post
The Lok Ayuta in my state does good work here, every now & then we get to find out about babbus being nabbed having assets they could never have afforded to get, on govt. pay, in several life times.
But otherwise, yes, there is this illusion it does not happen as much abroad but that’s only because they are more subtle about it, or as Sangram said ‘put a veil over it’.
he who has not bribed a traffic police … take the first stone now …its all well and good but when a cop flags you down for a offence , even if you have not done it , you are not going to fight the case …you look for the easy way out and then pay him…stop doing that and then the bigger things will stop but heck who am i kidding , this is india …anything and everything gets done
“Corruption is a tree, whose branches are Of an immeasurable length: they spread Everywhere; and the dew that drops from thence Hath infected some chairs and stools of authority”

Looks like we’re all ready to live like this. Anyways, it was just a passing thought generated cos of a discussion I was having with my friends regarding this.
Maybe when I’ve grown older and ready to retire, I’ll start a crusade or something
there are way too many things wrong with the world today. If you try to fix them yourself, it will never work. The only solution I see it is to do our part, do what we think is right ( you cant force your POV on ethics down someone else’s throat), and leave it at that. If you can improve the world around you, good. else too bad. forget it and move on, while doing your part.
^^If u ever have to work with the govt. sector, u’ll see, u can’t do what u think is right. Pay up or get stuck.
if you do, let me know if i could be of some help.
Hah, yes when you have nothing to lose (or gain)
Notice the statements politicans make when they are in office compared to when they are out of it. Blair is a good example.
quite true. What i meant is , not to be the one causing it. ie if you get caught speeding, and get slapped with a 500 buck fine , pay it and ask for a reciept instead of negotiating for a bribe.
On the other hand , if a cop flags you down for no reason and asks for a bribe when you are on your way to something urgent, then you really have no choice
Unlike what Sangram said, there is a difference between corruption in India and other countries..
In japan and other places when you pay a bribe, it end there with your work done..In india, You start a chain..(a silsala in hindi) And there is no end to it..you keep giving and giving and giving..
well what about HD kumarswamy(HDK) i mean his son has a porsche carrera, hummer etc.and is father HD deva gowda as 1000+crores.i wonder why lokyuta wont mess with them.
As far as bribes are concerned, there is one more major difference. Usually in other countries, you pay bribes to get some illegal/illicit work done. But here you have to pay bribes even to get the people to do their duty.
did not understand the diff with japan ?
If a bribe is taken anywhere, there has to be chain as everyone wants their cut.
I guess the difference is that he could prove they were ‘gifts’
Look abroad the unsual thing or at least perceptively is the lower rungs are free and more principled than the higher -ups. It seems a contradiction in terms as i’ve always thought this was a top-down thing.
Thats wat i said..first of all since its not so open there, bribe one and get your work done..
Here bribe one..another one want then another..in the end there’s still no guarantee of things being done..:@ While in other countries, its give and forget..Here they are taking bribe from you and show as if doing ehsan(obligation) on on you..
I give a f**k about other countries. I don’t mind paying extra for a service done in a day which would otherwise takse months following the archaic red tapism here.
I have seen tons of relief money going astray and that part of corruption is what I really hate. Ppl openly benefiting from corruption and flaunting it is another of my pet peeves. A traffic cop making a 100 bux extra is not what I grudge. He doesn’t get paid enough for standing in a polluted area for a whole day while worrying about a white shirt for the next day.
Seriously, it’s sad that there’s no public body in India who can really be trusted for doing anything against this malaise.
Going total anti-establishment ain’t gonna make me able to earn a honest living. That’s why I’m gonna wait for retirement from business to really try tightening the screws. However worthless the effort might be…
Thats cos the lok yukta doesn’t have the authority to raid politicians.
they have been asking for this power for quite sometime now, but politicians(ultimate authority) turn a deaf ear to them.
hell they dont even have the power to prosecute the guys they catch, they can only report it to “authoities”.
i remember once they caught a police constable they raided having 45 sites in bangalore.
he was suspended for 1 week. :S
