Installed PCLOS 2007 on my friend’s comp along with XP. Facing no problems.. (atleast till now )
He has the following config(It’s a lappy)-
Core 2 Duo
1 gb DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA 6150 GPU
160 gb HDD
Here are the 2 problems I’m facing- 1. I want to use the Beryl/Compiz package. It is already installed in this distro. But, the 3D options are disabled.
Now, I don’t know whether this is the cause, but I downloaded the NVIDIA drivers and tried to install them.
So, I logged in as root and ran the following command -
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run
I then encountered an error saying that the Windows X server is running and I need to stop it.
After some googling I found this-
CTRL+ALT+F2 login as root
/etc/init.d/gdm stop install the drivers
/etc/init.d/gdm start
But, it does not seem to work. How do I resolve this? 2. Secondly, (I could not find a thread on this, so please excuse if there is) how to dial-up broadband on this? I want to dial TATA Indicom Broadband…
Wow, I’d even forgotten about this post of mine… But, now me moved on to Ubuntu 7.10.. with compiz-fusion pre-installed… Even the NVIDIA drivers are installed now along with working broadband.

Wish it was that easy for me… having a hell of a time with my wireless adapter… trying to get ndiswrapper working… I am so close… but not quite there yet
I was thinking more on the lines of a short review of gutsy from a newbie’s point of view… waiting for the final release.. Not about the features per se, but through the point of view of a windows user making the shift to Linux…
I’ve just started using Linux since the past month and am finding it quite easy to work with..
Just need some time.. Busy with the submissions right now…
Not yet summoned the courage to install the 64 bit version, heard it’s quite buggy:P .. Does it really give a noticeable performance boost?? Someone posted on Ubuntu forums that there’s around a 30% increase in speed..
Secondly, how good is the support in the case of repositories when it comes to installing apps on the 64 bit versions??

Yes it does… very much

This used to be a bit of a problem… but I think because pretty much all new systems are now going 64bit, there is more a of a demand. I rarely have issues with repositories anymore. Drivers can be more difficult, but this is becoming far less of a problem too. I would rather buy another adapter so that i can continue using 64bit, than switch to 32bit.
NDISwrapper - Home
should help you with your ndiswrapper
Thank you :D…
but…been there, done that… it turns out that it’s not an issue with the install as much as with tthe 64bit version of the driver I ma using… the 32 bit driver works just fine… a bummer for me
