i’m looking to get an external hard disk drive for my editing work. i will be storing important as well as large files on it so i’m looking for something above 200 gigs.. minimum 160. i’d prefer firewire but i’m having a hard time finding any firewire drives here so i was thinking of usb2 although it’s not as good as fw.
the thing is i found a drive with a massive amount of storage for cheap here but i haven’t heard of the brand.
im wondering if i should buy that or if i should go with a trusted brand even though it’s more expensive. my data is really important like i said.
any suggestions and recommendations of brands and models (preferably firewire)? the only external hard disks i’ve heard of are seagate, WD, maxtor and lacie.
If you are willing to buy an external case and attach your own HDD to it then there is one more option … eSATA … I have an eSATA Vantec case with a Hitachi 160GB HDD in the case and I get pretty decent speeds from this combination - around 62MB/S from HDTach - compare this to a USB2 speed of around 33MB/s.
If you do go the eSATA way try use a HDD known to run cool as HDDs in external cases get very hot. One advantage of the eSATA case over others is that it can boot Windows. Disadvantage of eSATA is that it uses an internal connection from back plane to a SATA header on the mother board - it can still be connected to other computers with a USB2 cable.
