Looking for a headphone in the 50-100$ range. Shall get it from abroad. Suggestions wanted. Currently looking at Sennheiser HD497 and HD280. If anyone knows of anything better, please do comment.

Anyone has had any luck with HD485 cans? Seeing it online at around 75$. Is it worth the 25$ over HD497? Also how are the Grado SR60/SR80s?
Shameless plug , but i am thinking of selling my Sennheiser HD 580 precision headphones used for less than a year, sparingly.
I prefer using speakers nowadays. so i want to get rid of redundant things that i have. I can sell you my Sennies for $160. I bought them for $200 last year. And they still go for around the same price in the US.
I have a special Amplifier made by a qualified person for use with high impedence headphones like these senns (useful for headphones with over 300ohm). I might let go off the combo. let me know if you are interested.
I also have a kimber mini-RCA cable , and guess how much this costs ? $70…but of course i am not selling this in india 
, i guess i should get more than $50 at least shipped to the US.

why dont you give the grado sr60 a shot.. was selling for about 120$ sing but had already got a hd497 and a px200 by then

get the dsp500 from amazon for 48$ .its the best deal u will ever get. the headphones are crazy. i used my friends for a week. they are usb & have their own soundcard. mad quality for music.
if u can get 1 more then i want 1 dsp500 for myself.
Grado SR60/SR80s are well worth their price and are usually the headphones to buy at their price point respectively. They are particularly adept at Rock music too - which should suit your taste ;).
However the SR80 inspite of being a step above the SR60 needs a dedicated headphone amp to really shine, while the SR60 can make do with the amplification coming off a standard portable player. Another downside for no fault of theirs is they are quite “revealing”, so a poor quality audio source would really show through on them. Another thing to note is its old-school look! If you’re ok with it it would be a great choice.
If you want a headphone that looks more modern, is more forgiving on the purity of its source and doesnt need an amp to shine , a Senn hD497 is still the best choice. Not much clue on the HD 485s unfortunately.
Me getting the Sennheiser HD280..currently at $100 at newegg.
Although they are not that good at the extremes..they are very very nice sounding headphones and are great at noise-cancelling (one of the main reasons am getting them).
The HD280s arent exactly “noise cancelling” per se. They’re ‘closed ear’/sealed headphones
Headphones are broadly classified into two types - open ear and closed ear.
Open ear headphones have the ear cups open to the ambience so they dont sound confined and hollow like closed ear phones and can offer a broader soundstage. And also of course to enable you to be in touch with ambient sounds as well.
Closed ear headphones basically have ear cups that are completely sealed off from the outside, and soft cushioning with a tight fit on your ears to further enhance the isolation. Its more like literally covering your ears to reduce outside noise 
This is more of a passive way of noise reduction.
Noise cancelling phones on the other hand uses a more active method of circuitry involving external earphones picking up the ambient noise and inverting the sound and applying it to what you listen to in your headphones. The sum total of the ambient noise + inverted waveform tends to negate the ambient sound. However it isnt very effective owing to the limited frequency range the microphone can pick up and other factors.
Nonetheless the HD280s are well worth their price for noise isolation

The best value for money headphones if you buy in india are the philips HP 840, if you are willing to take good care of them, cause they break easily. For music of course, in my opinion they are a little better than the Philips HP 890 that i used to have a while back. The 890s had flabby bass, owing to the ultra large 50 mm drivers. The 840s use the same driver mechanism with a 40mm set, providing much tighter bass response.
Although the 840s dont have as huge a soundstage the 890s did, in my opinion they sounded more accurate.
Again it depends a lot on you whether you want isolation or not..in that case you might get a set of closed ones. Something of the sort of HD280s.
Musically of course, the 840s are on par with the 280s, albeit with a different sound signature.
^^hey.. thats what I have.. and yes, u r right about them being delicate..
as for sound quality, I like them, but then again i am not that much of a music/audio buff so i cudnt tell the difference too
Sorry for resurrecting this thread guys but just to let u ppl know… my friend got a Sennheiser HD-485 for me. I had initially thought of the grado sr-60/80 but it seems that they were too uncomfortable. The sennies costed 85$. Also got a pair of shure e2c earphones :). Thanks for all the help ppl.

^^How are the 485s? They cost around 35$ more than the 497s, is it justified?
I havent got to test it yet :). My friend told me that they are a lot better and have a real soundstage unlike the cheaper 497 cans! Also this one is circumaural whereas 497 is open air. Might make a difference i guess. Shall post a review once i receive it (that’ll be 9th or 10th).
