Help choosing a GFX card for casual gamer

Hi,

For a casual gamer (plays only in free time for some relaxation :)) what would be the best graphics card to choose at the moment?

Would like to play most games at normal to high resolutions and will not upgrade for another 1.5 to 2 years.
The budget is 9K or less.

Would appreciate any inputs on this.

resolution?

HD 4850 for 9.5k will get you through for the next 1.5 years

If you wanna settle for something cheaper get the 9600GT for 6k

Ok. Seems the HD4850 is the most recommended card for now

I was reading elsewhere that most ATI cards have compatibility problems that fail to run some games. Is this true or are they just rumors/rubbish?

dude i have a 4850 and a gtx260 and i am telling u 4850 is the way to go

rumors/rubbish

phaail to run games  …its rubbish…

HD 4850 best card for 9.5k-10.5k now …

next best 9800GT or 8800 GT for 7.5k-8k…

RUBBISH … if you wanna re-confirm check out the show-off section to find out which card has been the favorite of my fellow TE members.

The HD4850 is a gem of card … fast .. very fast .. ATI driver team has been rolling out newer and better drivers very frequently..you can buy the card eyes closed.

Ok. I guess its a HD4850 with eyes closed then

BTW is there a difference in the Brand when choosing? And also where would be the best place to get it from in Chennai/Bangalore?

Try getting from one of the dealers @ TE .. they will give you a good price not to mention it will be shipped to your place for a nominal amount .. and you end up saving on time spent on travel and to search for a good deal .. and then haggle the dealer for a deal as good as you get on TE.

If possible get the one with a dual slot cooler .. plait should be the cheapest..sapphire..gecube are the TIER-1 brands for ATI

^^i dunno u guys suggestin 4850 on wt basis…
@TS pls mention ur rig config n res u wanna play…its very much deciding factor of wts best for your rig. if you got a p4 rig..then a 4850 is of no use.

+1 for 4850, but 8800 GT is also not bad choice.

oft chewed topic, get a 4850 and rest in peace for the next 1 year or so.

yes mate cant go wrong with the 4850, its a lovely card!! and for 9k u should be set for atleast next 18 months!

+1 to that.

Guys, every1’s suggesting a 4850 without even asking the guys current config. Dat’s great. Well, dat’s not expected out of TE members atleast. :stuck_out_tongue:

ATI 4850 is very good card but it also needs some other components to properly run in sync. We don’t even know what PSU he has. Do u want to burn off that beautiful card!!! :S

Why noone’s mentioning bottleneck? It’s not much of an issue with midrange cards but with 4850, it would be some serious issue if the guy does not have good proc and sufficient RAM. So, keep ur cool and let the thread starter mention his rig details before blindly hopping on to the 4850 brandwagon…

  1. Wht power supply do u have ?
  2. What is ur current config ?

The config is still under construction

Here are the specs,
Corsair VX450
CM-690
Q9300
ASUS P5Q Mobo
2 x 1GB DDR2 800 MHz G-Skill RAM
ATI 4850
Samsung SH-S223F DVD
HDD WD 320GB SATA
19" Viewsonic/DELL/HP
APC 650 VA

I believe a casual gamer really needs a very powerful card  Think about it; you got a couple of hours on a hot sunday afternoon, when you want to play a nice game to forget about all the stress accumulated over the week. Would you want to fiddle around with the settings, keep an eye on the fps - or just fire up the game, bump everything to max, and game away?

the config is very good…i wud suggest 19" dell:P.
the ATI 4850 is ur best bet for now:)

very well said, +1 to that
