Alright …this is the scenario now… I plan to have 4 computers at home…
and I am tired of running around with a pen drive or a external HDD
So i plan to setup a home network (wired as well as WiFi)
Plan till now
Home server cum download rig running 24/7 (PIII, 160 GB ,128 MB ram running Kubuntu) will be running headless:cool2:
Normal browsing computer with a 300 Kbps net connection (Celeron 3 Ghz, 2gb ram 667, 160 GB HDD, generic 450w)
Modest Gaming rig cum work rig😒 (E4500, 8800 Gts 320 mb, 2gb ram , 160 GB HDD, VX450)
HTPC (palit N73V, not fired up yet… no proccy or RAM or PSU or GFX card ----have to decide the specs soon )
So I need help in the following setup
**What router to use **— 1 plan to have 2 computers with a USB dongle for Wifi and not wired to the main rig
2 Computers wired to the router
1 rig running 24/7 on BSNL ultd
1 rig with 2 lan ports and another 300 kbps ultd connection for gaming and some downloads
I need to buy a good VFM router under 2.6k
Options now for router🤔
WHR G125 (dunno whr its available online or in shops..Ahmd or mumbai shops prefferred)
WHR HP g54
Linksys WRT54G
anymore suggestions are welcome
also I need
WiFi USB dongle
Cables
Tools for wiring
1 Lan card
While installing Kunbuntu I found that it automatically configures the network so I guess I will install the OS on the download rig after i get the network up and running…
Will start a thread soon…showing the entire build:)
Dont go for the WHR-HP-G54 or WRT54GL, because u can get 2 of WHR-G54’s for the same price and run it in WDS to get better wireless signals across your place and extend your network. For cables i think you should get good quality d-link cat6 wires. And for the Wi-Fi usb dongles get the cheapest available, and make sure they are compatible with ur router.
do you know any place whr I can get the Buffalo routers… I can get it from Lammy via my frd or thru online stores… cisco_tech’s reply gives me the hint tht i might not get anything from buffalo in ahmd…still will try from my dealear near my house who got me the VX450 also very difficult to get in Ahmd…
Thanks for the nos… I will give them a call…
so if i get the WHR by any source will it be better than a WRT54GL…(i think i can flash GL with a custom firmware too)
Try and contact prime abgb. They will ship it across to you in ahmedabad if its not available there. Her e-mail address is meenal@primeabgb.com
And regarding getting the WRT54GL, its not worth it because it costs approx 3.5k. You can get 2 X WHR-G54S and extend your wireless network. So i would say get 2 of those and be happy and dont regret like my friend who got a WHR-HP-G54 and keeps whining about the decision he took :P.
Yes you can flash WRT54GL with custom firmwares. i m currently using WRT54GL with Tomato and signal quality is excellent. i get it everywhere in my house.
but buffalo is also nice and cheap.
indeed it is a big problem here man. some dealer doesnt know about stuffs like corsair and coolermaster.
@rushabht … i have been to prime..so i can get the buffalo thr right…
@cisco_tech … sure will let u know… i got my VX450 from the dealer near my house for 3650 …will try for the buffalo…
but i more thing… the dealer can get me the stuff and doesn’t stare blankly , **but he wants the exact model and i should know the price **…otherwise i might get ripped off…
VX450 was quoted at 4100… which after negotiations came down to 3650…so i think u get the picture thr
So whts the price of the Buffalo router and exact model nos. i should look for
heh heh me too. I’m using 2 X WRT54GL’s in WDS with tomato, so i get wireless connectivity throughout my house. But when i bought my routers back then the buffalos werent available locally, so i had to settle down for the expensive WRT54GL’s
Are the WRT54GL still available? I went looking for one about a month back, but not a single shop in Ritchie St had it. Ended up getting a Buffalo G125 for about 2000 bucks. Not that its bad though. Flashed with tomato firmware, and it does a pretty good job.
Yes you can but you will have to put the experimental tomato firmware on it.
This is what was listed on the polarcloud site :
A separate test build with newer drivers (-ND) is now available. It’s for the WHR-G125 and WRH54G, but it will also work on a few other routers. Not a lot of testing has gone into this, and it will definitely not run correctly on all routers that run just fine on the “normal” firmware, so please use with caution. Thanks to George for making it work on the WHR-G125.
So try and get the WHR-G54S, because that is the broadcom chipset. You will be able to flash the normal tomato firmware out of the box on WHR-G54S, and dump the experimental firmware unlike the WRH54G.
