High page file usage in XP : 1.65gb!!

since the last 2-3 days the page file usage has been very high!!

i get a msg from windows saying virtual memory is low and the page file size needs to be increased…and then the page file size usage goes to 1.65gb! :S :S

i tried looking up a few things on the net…so i set my page file size to 1500mb but still it doesnt help!
the system specs are
X2 3800+ on Foxconn NF4SK8AA
512 x 2 OCZ DDR400
running Win XP SP2
have utorrent…some messengers running…

i did a comeplete virus scan…also ran spybot a couple of times but didnt find anything…and its not like the system slows down or anything.

try this..set it to no paging file reboot your computer then again set it to custom size ie 1.5times the amount of ram you have…utorrent sometimes has this problem when there are a large no of seeds or peers

^^ tried the above method…but it didnt work!

this is the current status…the page file usage starts with abt 280mb n then climbs to over 1 gb!

any help??? :S :S

I may be stating the obvious, but did you try defraging the hd

do one thing, terminate processes individividually and check whether it makes any significant change to the PF usage. Start with 3rd party stuff like the jusched (which is utterly useless)

well the when i do close certain apps the page file usage does go down…but the usage is already close close to 1.5gb and it goes down to abt 1.2gb after closing the apps…

even after closing just about evrything? Try to close down the windows default services (like explorer and rundll32). When you close certain svchost.exe service a dialog is shown stating that the system beguins to restart after a minute (similar to the blaster virus).

Then go to RUN and enter “SHUTDOWN -A” to stop the system from rebooting. Then continue the elimination process.

Check if this works for you …

in the System.ini file which is loacted in the Main windows directory add the line exactly as shown … make it the first line under the [386enh] heading … check the current swapfile usage and make this entry and reboot and again check usage… this used to work for me in the older versions of Windows … what this does is that it makes Windows use the physical memory fully before using the swapfile.

[386enh]
ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1

@Kumar : i tried wat u said… tried clsing all possible processes and the Page file usage went down from 1gb to 300 mb…

but i really couldnt do anything after that…a reboot later and page file is again at 700 mb already…

ok, then do one thing. Go here and download Free ram XP.

Then unzip the attached config file and load the settings from that file in freeramxp (go to settings and there will be an option to import preferance/config file).

Then right click on the tray and free the ram by around 80%. That must solve the problem.
Also, did you notice which service is taking the largest amount of the page file? Pls post the service and we shall see whether anything can be done about it.

well…when the usage goes really high…Iexplorer is the one using the most memory…but closing all windows doesnt reduce the page file usage by much…

even closing utorrent doesnt help much…

its like longer the pc is on the bigger the size of the page file!!

there is some memory leak or something similar going on. Did you try the s/w i posted above?

yup…while using it the page file usage went really high and then came back to where it started frm…around 700mb…so it didnt change anything..

hmmm…

by elimination, the processes taking major portion of the pf are IE and utorrent right? any other system processes (like svchost.exe) taking up significant pf?

system proccess dont really take up much of the memory or page file…
i’ve scanned the system for spyware…viruses etc…found nothing…

what i cant figure out is…why the page file increase in size so much with passing time???

Its most probably due to mem. leaks from 3rd party apps … U’ve updated Windows rite ?? Post the 3rd party apps u use .. maybe that’ll be of some helps .. Also , run the attached file and see whats the actual pf usage ..

funny,i have the same problem since last week or so..

I suspect something is triggering utorrent to cause memory leaks. It grows over time and runs out of virtual memory..It leaks like 50MB/hour in my case..

I heard of utorrent memory leaks, never had experienced one until last week or so..

I wonder what is the real cause..

i chaged the page file settings…i am letting windows manage the page file size…

Its been a couple of hrs and the page file size is abt 450mb…

Always set a Custom size n never set to System managed size, which was i think your prev setting. Thats why initially it wud start with less size n increase gradually as u open more applications.
