Best books IMO are:

   Java - How To Program (Deitel & Deitel)

   Advanced Java - How To program (Deitel & Deitel)

These books are very practical, beginner-to-master oriented, simple and have amazing explanations. They really make you a good programmer with their insight and logic. Also the Thinking in Java book can give you good insight on OOP concepts!!

You can look For Core Java, Vol 1 & 2. They are excellent in providing clear explanation of the basic and advanced concepts
