Major Bomb Blast in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: At least 40 people were killed on Saturday in a suspected suicide car bomb attack on the Marriott Hotel in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, the city’s police chief reported.

“A car laden with explosives rammed the gate at the Marriott and so far we have brought out 40 dead bodies, but the number could well be higher,” police chief Asghar Raza Gardazi said.

The hotel was badly damaged and caught fire after the blast, which destroyed dozens of cars outside and shattered windows and damaged buildings hundreds of metres (yards) away.

Hours before the blast President Asif Ali Zardari, making his first address to parliament, several hundred metres to the east of the hotel, said terrorism had to be rooted out.

Police at the scene said 20 bodies had been taken away and people were still trapped inside. A crane was brought in to try to get people out.

Fire began in at least two places in the building and spread to other parts of the 290-room hotel, located at the foot of the Margalla hills in the city centre. There was a large crater in the road by the hotel’s heavy security barriers.

The street was littered with debris and broken branches from roadside trees and acrid smoke drifted in the air.

The blast brought down the ceiling in a banquet room where there were about 200 to 300 people at a meal to break the fast during the holy month of Ramadan, Imtiaz Gul, a journalist, was among them. “We just ran for cover, I could see a lot of injured people lying around me,” Gul said.

The hotel, popular with foreigners, has been bombed twice before but the Saturday evening blast was the most serious in the Pakistani capital since the country joined the U.S.-led campaign against militancy in late 2001.

Al Qaida-linked militants based in sanctuaries in the Afghan border have launched a bloody campaign of bomb attacks in retaliation for offensives by the security forces.

Zardari, the widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, is close to the United States and had earlier vowed to maintain nuclear-armed Pakistan’s commitment to the US-led campaign against militancy, even though it is deeply unpopular.

In his address to parliament, he said Pakistan must stop militants from using its territory for attacks on other countries. He also said Pakistan would not tolerate infringement of its territory in the name of the fight against militancy.

Zardari won a presidential election this month to replace firm US ally Pervez Musharraf who stepped down in August under threat of impeachment. Zardari is close to the United States and had earlier vowed to maintain nuclear-armed Pakistan’s commitment to the US-led campaign against militancy, even though it is deeply unpopular.

ISLAMABAD: About 1,000 kilograms of explosives were used in the huge blast that gutted the five-star Marriott hotel in the heart of the Pakistani capital killing at least 40 people and injuring 100 others.

The explosion created a crater 25 ft deep and 30 ft wide, totally destroyed the road in front of the building and sparked a fire that engulfed about two-thirds of the 290-room hotel.

About 1000 kilograms of explosive material was used in the blast that was triggered when a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the main gate of the hotel, local TV channels reported.

Media reports said the explosion brought down the ceiling of the banquet hall, where some 300 people were sharing a meal to break the fast during the holy month of Ramzan.

The windowpanes of the buildings around the hotel were shattered and at least two dozen cars stationed at the parking lot completely destroyed in the impact of the blast.

Its the work of Al-Qaeda. They have targeted the US nationals residing in that Hotel. Around 1000kilos RDX was used which left a 20 meter crater.

They would have a motive, its big & spectacular. It’s also a high stakes gamble as i wonder how they can expect much public support from this point forward. Biting the hand that feeds so to speak.

That’s the confusing part, i think they had pretty good support upto this point. So why would they risk it all. It certainly strenghtens the US position to do more raids into the country now does it not and that of the Pak president to allow it and be more pro-active, therefore it would benefit the enemies of AQ & the Taliban.

So lets see who claims responsibilty and what the Pak public reaction is and whether there will be any changes ?

“Jo Dosron Kai Liye Khadai Khodata Hai, Wo Usmain App Hee Girta Hai”

I am very sad for innocent people died there in blasts.

I fear pakistan might put the blame on India for the blast. World politics can really get dirty.

Just look at the crater the blast created. Spine-chilling!

RIP all those dead! Heard in news that the Czech ambassador to Pak has also died.

I fear pakistan might put the blame on India for the blast. World politics can really get dirty.

..well, if they do they have to include the CIA & Mossad as well

If that indeed is what happens, then we back to business as usual.

Pak govt offers Rs 1 cr for hotel blast info | Pak blast, settling scores?

did u see the history channel EX cia agents say that pakistan ISI trains terrorists ,and every terror network orginates from pakistan, since US is now sending its predator uav to attack terror hideouts in pak territory, and since afganistan accused pak ISI for indian embassy bombings and president bush asking pakistan who is in control of ISI,i believe that the bomb blast was also organised by ISI to show the US that they are also fighting the war on terror.

in the history channels show ,it shows that the CIA are worried who is in control of pakistan NUKE since pakistans ISI was caught selling nuke tech to north korea. and Al Qaida have been trying to procure nuke for a very long time

very sad for the loss of life, again innocent are targeted. 1000 kg of RDX,for info after nuclear weapons RDX is the most powerful explosive.

Does this imply they have no leads whatsoever.

No one taking the credit yet ?
