Pls suggest cool-n-quiet 3.5 IDE HDD

Guys, I need to fit a HDD in a very cramped unit with limited ventilation. It will be used for storing and playing large media files. These are my requirements -

  1. It has to be 3.5 inch IDE drive (No SATAs pls)
  2. It has to be coolest possible (V. V. Important)
  3. It has to be quietest possible (Important)
  4. Performance is not an issue at all! I don’t care if its slow as long as its cool n quiet. In fact, I think that lower RPM drives may run cooler.
  5. Min size has to be 160GB though I will prefer 250GB or more.

I am in Delhi and can pick your suggested HDD from Nehru Place.

Waiting for your comments and suggestions!

try looking for the WD drives , you planning to use it fro HTPC ? U WILL still want a fan even if its a small 80mm running around the HDD , or else any HDD will feel the heat in delhi heat.

Get a Seagate 160gb 7200.9 series or Seagate 250gb 7200.10 SLIM one. Both are single platter drives, run cooler and quieter. Or, if you are willing to get a 500gb hdd, get the WD Caviar GP!

Yeah its a kind of HTPC. Unfortunately, installing fan is not an option. There is some ventilation around HDD area, I am hoping that it will be suffice.
Maybe I should go for a external HDD instead??

Are you sure they are IDE 3.5 inch drives (not SATA)? What might be the expected price?

As per off-board advice that I have been given recently -

I should buy a 2.5 inch, single platter, 5400 RPM hard drive and use it with a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter. This will ensure max possible cooling and quietness.

What is your take on this?

Dude,

You can even buy a 7200rpm 120GB/160GB drive from Seagate. I have the 100GB Seagate Momentus 7200.1 in my laptop system right now and it runs super quiet and cool and performance is not shabby at all when compared to average desktop drives. It’s perfect for a quiet PC.

But of course, this is alright if you don’t have a price constraint. The 160GB 2.5" 7200rpm drives cost around ~150$. If you do, the Seagate 3.5" 250GB single-platter drive will be the best option.

I won’t mind running a HDTach for you later in the day.

Payne

I vote for Hitachi.If u wait a month,u might get a samsung.They are making 2.5" 500GB.

seagate 250 GB slim…

Go for WD Se Carvier with HDD colling case…

Guys, I may be going to Nehru Place tomorrow to check out all suggested options. Thanks for the same!

Guys, I am back from Nehru Place and I am extremely disappointed. No one there knew what a single platter hard disk is. They didn’t know what “slim” hard disk would be. All they knew was 160GB Seagate 7200 RPMs PATA is Rs 2200. I came back empty handed.
