Rotary/Lions Club: Is it useful?

Is becoming a member of any such organizations like Rotary/Lions club beneficial to self and society? In what way?

If you get a free Lion, it might be useful… scare away robbers and salesmen from your house…

^^ The point is that the Lion may not be free at all considering that these organizations have membership fees and attendance rules !!!

But on a more serious note, is it useful at all ?

If you are just a member without any work, nothing much in it. If you get to organize events, do some seminar kind of stuff, then you get a chance to improve your skills. But see to that it doesn’t interfere with your regular activities, that way it’ll be PITA. You also get to interact with many people. Just telling my own experience. I concentrate on it only when i don’t have anything else to do (happens once in blue moon) :stuck_out_tongue: , am not that dedicated.

generally this clubs are consisting of members who are interested in leveraging the contacts developed thus to increase their business, influence.

Some even join these for garnering some exchange programme and get foreign tours.

Some are self egoistic so that they feel better if they get a seat on dias / stage or get hands on mic.

As such i personally feel there is no benefit in joining these organisations unless you are thinking on different lines.

If you are interested in social work then some NGOs or self created group woould be more helpfull.

I am the charter member of my Rotary Club. Yes it is good to join the community as you got to meet lots of new people, do some social service work like help the poor, blood donation

Also you get to party with the club members. So I would any day recommend everyone to be part of this large family.

Here’s my take:

  1. If social work is your aim (self development will automatically follow) then do it yourself, or join an NGO or a local group that is involved in the same cause.

  2. If you want the title that accompanies joining such clubs then by all means go ahead… but you may be limited in what you can do and you may have to shell out some cash to join them to boot…

U need verrrry deep pockets to be joining these..

FREE DAAARU! of course i get that in every other club too..

Okay - decided not to join this one - wait and watch for a year - know a few members and see how it helps them. Would’ve joined it only for charity (and i am not an actively charitable guy) - i have my own causes which I support (small ones at my native village), so dont need a Rotary to help me in doing that.

Thanks guys

^ Yeah, join these clubs if you have deep pockets, wanna build a social circle and of course want free food and booze

If your keen on doing real charity or social work, work with a NGO.
