**Sony Electronics, Inc. announced the launch & shipping of its 25GB single media, single layer Blu-ray Discs with its AccuCORE technology. In addition, a dual layer50GB capacity disc is set to debut in June.**Sony is now the second of two companies offering Blu-ray media in the write-once form with TDK being the first(Launch in Early April).
Sony’s Offering:
Sony Electronics’ version of the single layer Blu-ray media has Sony’s AccuCORE technology, which was first integrated into recordable DVD media over a year ago, has been re-engineered for Blu-ray Discs to deliver enhanced reliability and durability. Its major benefits include the following:
* **Scratch Guard** - hard coating that resists scratches, dust and static;
Archival Reliability - special material design that prevents data and image corruption and deterioration to ensure quality playback;
Stable Writing - a uniform and precise cover layer that reduces fluctuation as the disc spins
**Temperature Durability **- a high-precision disc structure helps prevent warping during severe changes in temperature and humidity.
Write Speed:
Currently the media is rated at 2X and will provide data transfer rates of up to 72Mb/sec,making it suitable for high-definition video recording and data storage applications.
In addition to media, Sony intends to expand the market for its Blu-ray media by offering a Blu-ray Disc player and internal drives for their VAIO desktop and notebook computers.

when the rewritable cds were introduced here even they were like a grand each.. but well you`d first buy a blu-ray drive !! that would be over the roof!
OMFG the first RW 4x i got was for some 450 bux (i dont remember the brand name properly) at tht time but the cd worked for 7 months properly used to write my school projects on it

He is talking about the drive.. not the media.. I still remember dreaming about owning a CDRW drive when they were for 20K in India..
Even then lite-on were the cheapest in US.
i saw 1 chip magazine which mentions…the first cd writer made was of 1X speed…and it was sold for 149000$…no idea which issue but it was somwhere of 1999
oops i thought he was talking bout the media since media was in discusion lol neways tht seems pricy maybe different people charged differently for the writers, i got my first LG cd writer 12x speed in 2001 for 6k (not india ofcourse)
