Thanks hanzy, Udit for superfast replies
I have decided for Canon IXUS70, mainly because to compactness and point-and-shoot operation. and they are giving away 2 gb card free Only thing it lacks is image stabilization.
buy Canon PowerShot SD850 IS (Digital IXUS 950 IS) as it is the same size with image stabilization
But it is for 80$ more! That’s quite lot. Anyways, I was quit bent on sx100 as well, I’ll get that if I plan to spend that much. 10x zoom looks enticing
I think sony is best for shaky hands.
Thanks for that generally generalized statement.
@Deus Ex: Lemme give you some recommendations
Always opt for models with Image Stabilization. Trust me, this matters. You don’t want all your non-flash night-snaps to come out blurry and then blame your camera for it. You can add memory later but not image stabilization.
Go for features and a 1GB card right now. Add in another huge card later, even with all the photography I do I have never run out of space on a 1GB.
What features? IS, wide-angle lens (<35mm), a big LCD, build quality and Li-ion are top on my priority for a compact.
Brands/Models?
Sony W80/W100/W200 - IS, excellent build quality. BUT no 28mm wide-angle, only 3x zoom
Canon IXUS series with IS - look for 28mm models. Excellent build again but limited zoom range mostly.
Panasonic TZ3 models - 28mm, 10x zoom, and IS. And compact.
Fuji F50fd - IS, excellent low-light shots, very good build. No wide-angle.
That’s my choices. You know what to get, shop right and do post if you have narrowed down your choices.

PS: Please don’t buy stuff for “offers”. My friend bought a Kodak $&*@ cuz it got a 2GB free. Please.
Those are my pick. Look for the ones which
@Payne
Had I been buying this for myself, beleive me I would have considered. But this is a case of a female friend(that makes it harder to explain ) gifting this cam to her parents. So my prime criteria were compactness and point-and-shoot interface.
Anyways, I know how important IS is. So I have settled for SX100. I’m a big fan of Canon so don’t really feel like going into Sony’s territory Rest of the brands she might not have heard about and hence skeptic about.
The 2 GB card is NOT a criterion but I would prefer getting it free
Double post! X-(
Fair 'nuff.
If you’re looking at the Canon SX100, you can also look at the Sony DSC-H3. I was a fan of Canon till I ended up with a Sony H2. Faster focus, great navigation system (jogwheel system) and better control. Of course, the Canon alternative had a better screen.

That’s for your help. The biggest difference is that the Sony is lighter/smaller and has a MUCH stronger flash + battery system which helps a lot in social parties/normal snaps. The Canon has more manual control and so is better suited to the enthusiast.
Take your pic. (no pun!)

PS: Btw, I still feel you’re better off with a Canon Ixus or Sony W-series or the Panasonic!
Enjoying with my Sony DSC-W70 from long!
If you travel around and take your camera around, clicking unnecessarily, get extra battery and a larger card.
Video recording is awesome as well at full quality! That’s how my 1GB card fills up easily Usually at stage shows and parties..
