Sony has said in the past that the PlayStation 3 would render traditional PCs useless given its powerful processing platform and Linux-based operating system. “We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions. The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC,” said Sony’s Phil Harrision in late May.

It appears that Harrison’s dream is coming true. The PS3 hasn’t even been released yet, but Colorado-based Terra Soft has announced a 3rd-party Linux-based operating system for the console. Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 fully supports the PlayStation 3 platform, is built on Fedora Core 5.0 and brings the following to the table:

[ul]
[li]kernel 2.6.16[/li]
[li]gcc 4.1.1 and glibc 2.4[/li]
[li]Cell SDK 1.1[/li]
[li]OpenOffice.org 2.0.2[/li]
[li]FireFox 1.5.0 and Thunderbird 1.5.0[/li]
[li]Nautilus 2.14[/li]
[li]Suite of Personal Accessories, Development Tools; Sound & Video, Internet, and [/li]
[li]Networking applications[/li][/ul]

The operating system will come with an easy to use installer to make installation a breeze. For those that are little more adventurous, a more advanced installer will be available giving users access to over 1,500 packages. According to Terra Soft, Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 is fully sanctioned by SCEI and incorporates code and input from Sony, Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Sony Group, and Fedora.

With this announcement, it makes more sense for buyers to rush for the high-end version of the PS3. That version’s a 60GB hard drive, wireless adapter and media reader would make the most of using the PS3 as a PC replacement.

::::noob alert:::: Is it possible to install windows on it???
I mean not directly…but may be on a modded system???

Wow !! The PS3 picture is getting more and more rosy by the day !!

LOL !! I doubt one would be able to install Windows on a PS3.
Microsoft would never support it, infact I think it will do all it can to prevent it.
Also The PS3 is the direct competitor to the Xbox360. Another no-no for Microsoft support!!
Ps. I just realised Microsoft isnt a very manly brand !! “Micro”-“soft”, sheesh.. who came up with that name !! :S

This is a major plus point for Sony. Dedicated Linux for Ps3 means it is technicaly a Computer now. Web Browsers (FireFox!) and the variety of applications which are going to be written for it, i can already imagine emulators and multimedia players making the Ps3 a PC enough for any casual user. Bluetooh Keyboard+mouse should appear soon enough, wired ones are confirmed.

Linux has the ability to run any device , ie its can be installed from microwaves to car stereo players . hence linux for PS3 . try installing windows on a car stereo !! :stuck_out_tongue:

If there can be a Windows mod for the PSP, there can be for the Ps3 :stuck_out_tongue:

And Linux, sure all of them run the thing, but the functionality has a huge difference. Yellow Dog Linux which the Ps3 will be running is nothing shorter than an OS of its own.

Yes, you can run Windows via bochs emulator… or even better, QEMU. BUT it will be run through Linux. Sony should really let people buy regular hdds of any size. I figure someone will manage that soon enough.
