Well I had the Norton AV 2004 preinstalled on my thinkpad. It is nowgivin me a big headache…Whenever I switch on my laptop I get the following message::::
“Norton Auto Protect driver cannot be loaded. Please restart your computer”
even after restarting the problem is still there.
Morever I tried to enable auto protect from norton menu, but failed.
I did not make any changes to settings or bios or anything.
My OS is XP sp2.
Please advise.
second problem is related to the choice of AV.
Norton is tooo slow and is too heavy onmy computer…
I have AVG prof ver 7, build 175, dated 9/11/2003
with latest virus definations…
What I want to know is—
how does AVG compare to norton in protection?
IS the old version of AVG with latest virus defs ok??
which is preferrable? latest AVG free or older AVG professional?
all i can say is, after using nod32, i have never gone back to any other antivirus, the speed of nod32 is just awesome, for me nod32 along with kaspersky are the top antivirus s/w.
for the scanning rate, usuage of system resources, it is the best a/v out there
p.s - most the a.v’s are resource hog when real-time scanning is enabled. you can configure it to scan only particular filetypes like *.exe etc, also have minimum ram of 512mb.
If you got a good broadband connection, you can use online scanning from HERE.
Its really good, and since you don’t have to install anything, it doesn’t slow up the comp.

online scanning is not a replacement for your a/v needs. it’s not real time scanning, for example, do you want me to go do online scan after every d/l, or you want to d/l for a week & then scan those files in a single go.
& most important is browsing cache, as most of trojan’s, loggers etc make the cache as home. so never skimp on a/v for your system, if your system is connected to the world, you must have proper protection.
p.s - if you dont have any a/v installed & need to urgently scan something for malicious s/w, then online scanners are handy
Yeah, but real time scanning really slows up the system.
I guess its upto you, and kinda work u do.For me,I normally scan the comp once in 15-20 days or so, don’t feel the need for real time scanning as not many threats(if any) are detected even after those many days.
As far as browsing cache is concerned, use of alternative browsers like opera reduce the risk to great extent

as i posted above(post 4), try other a/v products, not all hog up resources.
your approach to the a/v is too dangerous, all i can say is do install a/v, dont bet on virus sparing you after all the browsing you do.
check this thread about the various ways to protect yourself.
ask me, and i would suggest u go for kaspersky. it doesnot consume lot of resources and is quite good in its scanning techniqoe. ti has good features like auto-update and also protects u against network attacks.
