Using .PNG files as icons in Windows XP

Is there any way we can use PNG files as icons in XP?If i convert them to ICO files (vis Irfanview),the transparency is getting screwed up.

Any other way u can do it?

U cant use pngs directly as icons…and yes ico files will take all the good things off the pngs like transparency… so if u wanna use png for icons on the desktop or for launcher then u can either use Avedesk or ObjectDock/RocketDock/RK launcher/YzDock etc…

I use Icon Packager but it too seems to not support PNG files…any workarounds?

ICO’s should have no probs with Transparency .. use some other software like Gimp or Photoshop to convert the PNG’s to ICO …

I think AveDesk can do this. It removes all windows desktop icons and replaces them with ‘Desklets’ which can have PNG’s as icons alongwith configurable alpha values, shadows, etc.

This is another which can do it, Vista Icon Editor, XP Icon Editor, Macintosh Icon Editor, Windows Icon - Axialis IconWorkshop, you could also convert mac icons to pc i.e ico, icl format
