hey guys , i know therez a thread and a guide for all the dvd/divx players around , but i wanna make sure that the one am buying is the best and the latest.
So what do u guys recommend ? , and price if possible .
edit : My dad’s not too keen on a philips , since hez had a bad experience , besides he doesnt understand divx and all . He insists on a Sony . Are there any sony divx DVD players around ? .I want local warranty .So no imported stuff for me .
Sony has a mp4/divx player in hi-fi system format not as in a dvd player. I dont have the model no. But i din’t find any sony standalone dvd/divx players. You closest bet would be to import the pioneer 575 but you said you want warranty so we can rule that out. Which pretty much leaves you with Philips and Mitashi. Mitashi i certainly wudn’t recommend over philips.
hmmm so am pretty much left with philips … okay so am going with philips then . Next Question : which model ?
I havent seen the local stores as yet , tomo will call the philips marketing office .
So which modle number is it ? On the philips website its philips 5106 . Of what i have read on the forums people have got the 5500 , dvp642k is outta question .
5106k seems to be a rebadged 5100 so hopefully it will have a mediatek chipset. Still burn samples of ur divx/xvids movies and take them with you for testing
get the phillips dvp642. best player. i am using myself with progressive scan & connected to the z680’s. & also ive recommended it to many friends. every1 loves it.
plays all divx & xvid. but it has probs with some xvids. divx all work.
If anyone didnt know , the philips dvd player : DivX Karaoke DVD Player DVP5106K/97 is the one in question here , the model number 5106k is specific to Indian markets and is a rebadged 5100k . the " 97" in DVP5106K/97 is the firmware number .
I will update u guys tomo after calling the phlips marketing office and askin the latest scenario and prices .
Yeah dvp642k is the older version with the vibratto chipset and its phased out so don’t bother asking about it.
As for other models well there are a lot of models which have different names and have divx/xvid support but they arent available here. For the sony model, well it seems to be divx certified but check out xvid compatibility as well. All the best in you purchase.
on the LG India website i found another divx capable player !. The problem here is that the international model nos are different , and its very difficult to understand what chipset they use , the best being mediatek .
On the page of the philips dvp5106k it says it plays (S)VCD , so what does this mean ? … Does it only play SVCD or it plays both SVCD and VCD’s ? .

I surely don’t know,What’s the problem with Philips 642 DVD-Player?
…apart from that it ddoesn’t read Divx 6 files with subtitles.
(dont’ know whether any new firmware updates hav been done for reading Divx6 files too)
Well,I brought the 642k/69 on this Sep 17th after my pr’vious DVD-Plyr went kaput,(for Rs.4,300),but still now didnot find that SERIOUS trouble with it,apart from getting a rather a irritating complex remote (with MANY Double functn buttons) for the player & a non-intuitive interface.
Despite many forum members, crying out hoarse,(& probably philips dis-continuing the model),i hav found the player very compatible with most common Media formats, apart from prbably WMA & the NEW DivX 6.0 version.
The Pictures R graeat(even without progressive scans),Jpeg shows render real fast,& Mp3’s r just fantastic!
I on my OWN,think & rather RATE it AS A VERY GOOD(maybe BEST) VFM DVD in INDIA : Period
yea blady , from the list even i cud figure it out, but thatz for the 5100k from UK amazon, but at the philips website it says (S)VCD.
The sole reason this player is bought is because my mum’s got some convention’s VCDs she attended and she wants to watch them on TV .
If this bitch doesnt play VCD’s , my dad’s gonna chop me off … .
edit : on the specification page on the Indian philps India website , it says it supports VCD .
I finally got the philips DVP5106K/97 . Its one helluva beauty . Package says its imported in september 2005 . My local vashi dealer just got it a day back . I paid 4700/- for it .Though the price at various vijay sales shops is 4850/- . The MRP is 4990/- . Its made in China , says in hindi too :).
To remove certain doubts , its 5.1 channel .
It plays everything u throw at it ! and looks pretty sweet too . the remote’s good , the interface is pretty decent too . Will post an indepth review in a few days , before that i need to get certain basics of various formats .
but therez a problem , there are certain movies( mostly the newer ones which seem of quite good quality) which lag a lil , its not very irritating , a very slight lag , but once noticable can get a lil irritating . It may be encoded in the packed bitstream thingy , i dunno abt all this .
So can someone enlighten me how to get rid of this and get smoother frames ? i read somewhere thatz itz no biggie . Space is no criteria and it need not fit the 700 mb mark , am gonna burn it on a DVD anyway .
Hehe congrats on your purchase. Like i had mentioned in my guide, the mtk 1389 chipset plays almost evrything but has hicupps playing packed bit stream. You can use a tool like Mpeg4 Modifier from ( http://www.moitah.net/ ) and unpack the bitstream.
Congrats on your purchase. Like i mentioned in my guide the mediatek 1389 chipset has problems playing packed bit stream. Hence you need to use a tool like Mpeg4 Modifier from ( http://www.moitah.net/ ) and unpack it. This is will make the movie playback smooth. Enjoy your player.
