Looking to adopt a dog…Preferably a large breed…
Considering the English Mastiff and Great Dane…The former is tough to find…
Anything anyone would like to add to this thread about the 2 breeds or any other large breed?

2.Abt the english mastiff, before you buy just make sure that they will not be miserable in indian climate…
nothing abt english mastiff…but great danes ..yes !! lots of space please …my buddy had 3 of them and you had to daily keep them exercised or else chances of leg problems arises a lot …i prolly think thats the case with all big size breeds …so good luck
..oh and if you live in an appartment, check if your the building association will even allow you to keep a dog
Hmm…Thx for the info guys…
Space is not a constrain at all…
Yes, English Mastiff is the largest breed but not sure how they cope with Indian climate… Morover they eat a lot…They grow upto 85kgs…32inch min height and can stretch over 6 feet in length… They are also amongst the strongest. Tough to find and maintain though… Tried looking around in Hyd and cant find any Mastiff breeders.
For those curious abt English Mastiff:

Looking around for Great dane…
easiest way to get a good breed dog …call up your local kennel club or the president in it …they maintain a list of people who can help you out
Also, is there any relatively less demanding dog than a border collie but with similar intelligence? We do have a spacious house but itll be difficult for the elders in the family to keep up with the physical activity needs of the collie.
My friend has a neapolitan mastiff and just like a dane its a very dull breed, slobbering all the time. But its not a breed for a first time dog owner, needs firm handling. Their lifespan is very low, 7-8 yrs.
@soggy, you have a golden? me too have a female golden, 8yrs old.
my next dog will definitely be a mongrel
My friend has 2 English Mastiffs here.. Says there are only 3-4 people in Bangalore who do. What would you like to know? Can ask him all of that.
St.Bernard is a big dog too..i remember, a few years back, one of my neighbours in our colony bought one for some 20-25k…he was a really cuddly pup but he soon grew up into a BIG dog in no time…but was still very very adorable..
I know two people who had St.Bernard’s. Not fit for Indian weather. Both died very early ..
Yes mate…
Ask him these if poss
Is Indian summer ok with the Mastiffs?
Do they eat a lot… I intend to feed it meat on alternate days only…and abt 500gms at that…Rest will be veg.
Can he lead me to someone who can sell that and whats the price for a month old pup?
Are they very dull and does it slobber a lot…?
Are they good guard dogs…?
Is it tough to take them for walks…got pulled around a bit with my GSD…mastiff is whole lot bigger and stronger…so the Q…
Are they resistant to training? Do they learn easily?
General demenour…?
btw Great Danes are not springy but they r very affectionate dogs…
Same goes for Mastiffs. St Bernard is a cute giant but slow learner…Thats not in my list.
That video’s disgusting.
lol…Yeah…
Il never make my dog high on meat…
True… And they shed too much fur as well owing to the tropical weather.. Same goes for Collie…its really hard to maintain their lustrous fur in this weather..soon u’ll see doggy fur all over ur bed/sofas/carpets/clothes and all the places tht they love to rub themselves against..
Evn my German shepherd used to shed a lot of fur especially during summer..She was with me for 8 years, but succumbed to stomach cancer…
Probably great dane wud be best suited then…their fur is short like tht of a doberman.. labra and dalmations are good options too as they have short hair and are better suited for this hot weather..
Stay away from golden retriever for the same reason..they shed too much hair..but they look really cute..
Spoke to him.. And he has only 1 female btw.
Yes mate…
ASk him these if poss
Yeah no prob as long you get it as a pup because then it’l get used to it.
- Do they eat a lot… I intend to feed it meat on alternate days only…and abt 500gms at that…Rest will be veg.
Yes they do.. you have to give it meat everyday.. at least 500-1000gms a day.. He gives his all sorts of non-veg.. beef, chicken, fish etc.. rice 3-4 times a day.. and exercise is needed to avoid overfeeding which will lead to them becoming HUGE
- Can he lead me to someone who can sell that and whats the price for a month old pup?
in bangalore theres no one.. most people import. you should do a lot of research when getting one.
male is ~45-60k and female 25-40.. depends. He paid 35-38k for female cuz he has a champion bred one and plus was imported hence adding to the cost.
- Are they very dull and does it slobber a lot…?
not at all. very active.. his follows human patter of sleeping nicely at night and being awake n active (mostly) during the day.
- Are they good guard dogs…?
depends how train them.. his is just about the house
- Is it tough to take them for walks…got pulled around a bit with my GSD…mastiff is whole lot bigger and larger…so the Q…
yeah depends on training. if they’r scared of you or listen to you then it shouldn be a problem.. but if they pull you then they’l take you for a walk instead
- Are they resistant to training? Do they learn easily…
his was hard to train..
- General demenour…?
umm..? friendly.. depends on trainin.
About great danes, he had two of them before. Says dont get them cuz they’r veryy hard to maintain and plus they die fast.. Was saying something like these big dogs have a problem that if they eat a lot, which they do, lotta gas is formed in the stomach which eventually somehow lead to their death. English mastiffs have some resistance to this.
Also, great danes need a lot of exercise and care to prevent these things and it has to be balanced with how much food you give them etc..
Heh they and labs are the easiest and best to keep man..
Labs are the best !
Thanks… That price decided for me…I cant afford more than 25k for a dog…
^^^Anyone?
