I know everyone has the right to sell their products at whatever price they deem right, but many times I see FS threads where people out of lack of knowledge of current market prices or some other reason quote very high prices for their stuff.
I am not talking about the ones where people ask for a marginally higher price than normal, but where they sell a 1 year old product at 1 year old prices when the current market prices are 1/2 to 1/3 of their prices. I mean the prices should be at least same or lower than the current market prices for a new item.
While most of the tech savvy members will be safe from such a sale, there will be many members in the forums who are not that updated about hardware and prices and would be led in to purchase only to regret later when they find out. Though TE has a policy of no-responsibility in case of sale disputes, its still TE that they are going to blame for it. I for one consider this problem as grave as the one where people low ball in the market threads.
I think at least some moderation should be done to save the newbies from such sales. When the prices quoted are too high compared to market prices, then let some or the other member inform it to a mod and they can take off the thread or hide it till a time the prices quoted seen reasonable. (By reasonable I mean, they should be less than current market price for the same new item. It would still allow the seller enough flexibility to quote his price.)
PM seller first. There will be plenty of people out there who are not aware of price fall that occured in last 1-2 years. Most of them are unaware. PM them. If they dont change then you can PM the mod..
There will always be someone who does not get the current market situation. In such cases mods can talk to the user.
the three threads namely latest prices from nehru place,sp road and from lamington road should made sticky in the market section that will help newcomers to get a taste of the current market prices before buying.
^^ Nope the whole point of a free mkt goes for a toss, just post the correct prices in the thread, and yet if some idiot wants to buy the stuff, his luck…
^^I disagree with the above sentiments:)This is a forum not a raddi bazaar..We are all here for some or the other sort of learning and helping…Just because you are a newbie does not mean that you should be cheated :) i feel that mods should have some control on the prices quoted or senior members should be given that permission
There’s is a funny little line between overpricing and putting up older gen machines on ridiculous price. I am sure majority of users here will agree. He must get a warning for attempt of scamming and delete the threat. This isn’t a market section like ebay, this is a community who know about prices easier then other forums and sell their stuff on reasonable prices. Members posted the link to latest prices and educated him that the price is way over the head and gave them advice to post it on ebay to try his luck. Though i think that advice would be ethically wrong, that’s the max anyone can say. But it Fell on deaf ears. In conclusion, delete the post and give a warning. This is the first and hopefully if the proper steps are taken, this will be the last.
Just because you are a newbie does not mean that you should be cheated i feel that mods should have some control on the prices quoted or senior members should be given that permission
Newbie or not, any sensible person when he sees Item A selling for Rs 1000 bucks, but another poster confirms the market price at Rs 500 ought to figure out that its not a good buy.
There is only so much control you can have, if the person yet does not get it, its tough luck. You cannot stop anyone from posting its against the concept of forums itself, besides the Parent poster has labeled himself as an oddball and no one will take him or his word seriously going on.
^^ there is no need for a seller to heed to the calls of others to lower his price. if i am selling something and i know what the going price for my item is, i would never look twice at the pm’s from those asking me to reduce the price. i would be better of not selling.
similarly when a seller quotes an extremely high price for his item, he is not going to find any buyers for it. atleast not knowledgable buyers.
IMO we could have a simple rule to take care that noobs dont get conned by a high pricing seller. once the buyer and seller have agreed upon a trade, we can simply ask them to post back in the sale thread with the rate at which the deal has been agreed upon. then, everyone could advice the buyer in case he is paying an exorbitant amount. The problem here though, would be to figure out what exactly an exorbitant amount is.
am not suggesting that ‘its possible’ am saying ki thats what happens…
there are on an average 5-6 threads a created per day…
am not too sure how much of an overhead this might create for the mods.. but i really think that there shouldnt be any interference when the thread is created.
If a clown wants to sell stuff at high prices.. no one will buy
Not feasible. And gets complicated by the fact that sellers may not have the same price for everyone. e.g., I’ll give a discount to friends on the forum. So I might not want to disclose the selling price in all cases.
The point about newbies getting conned keeps cropping up regularly. My take on this is that said newbies should know that they’re buying from a “Tech Forum”, and not from the market. If they don’t utilise the knowledge of other techies, its their fault altogether.
Just delete the sale post and warn the dude. Let this be an example to scammers. This is a techie community not crawford market where you can bargain a duplicate ray ban from flabbergasting 700 to 80 bux.
and that’s prolly the reason this thread got started in the first place
Sorry to be completely useless here, but this is a tricky situation.
If threads get deleted, it works against TE for sellers, if you crap on a sale thread same again.
If you tell someone he cant sell for so high and turns out he already has someone willing to pay, again why would the seller not want to proceed.
Seems no matter what you do, you piss off either party.
So what’s TE to be then ?
a buyer friendly place or a seller friendly place.
I’m under the impression its got it right atm. Policing is dirty business and i don’t think its worth getting into because then you got a slippery slope.
Haha nicely said
Thats exactly why the current policy is there.
People see, that 1 thread posted here really got out of hand. The guy is completely unaware of current market price and is unwilling to listen. But thats not the case 90% of the times. There was 1 more thread like that few days back and seller promptly changed prices when he was made aware of current market price.
So keep the unnecessary intervention to minimum. Let the buyer and seller work it out. And there is no scam here. Its plain ignorance on the buyer’s part if he does not do market study while purchasing something. If he agrees to pay the asked amount which is higher than market price or in reality unjustified then tough luck. Its the ignorance thats the cause of this.
This has been repeated throughout countless threads in feedback in past..
Actually staff cannot force anyone to reduce the price.
