RAM Busted ? How to check ?

 Having a 512 MB DDR1 400 Mhz purchased from a TE member itself.
I already had 512 MB in the system and then added on this 512 MB chip.
The system used to work absolutely fine. My windows crashed last week and hence I had to reinstall the OS.

Now the problem starts , the installation would go to 100% and then give
BAD_POOL_CALLER or IRQ_LESS_EQUAL - BSOD on the screen.

Somehow booted using another hard drive and tried transfering 1GB data from one drive to another and it threw up the same error BSOD.

Now , I removed the RAM chip and then everything went fine. Installation was smooth with just another 512mb and even the transfer was smooth from one partition to another.

So wat is the problem ?
Is there any test I can run on the RAM ?

If I dont transfer or install stuff that goes ahead and utilises the entire 1gb ram capacity then the system is just fine.

Please help. Any replies / suggestions would be appreciated  :cool2:

^ Testing it on another machines would be the best way.

Try Memtest though

Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

btw, Awesome Sig !!!

  1. lower the speed to 333 and then see

  2. increase mem voltage and then see

  3. to check ram use memtest

EDIT : @ Anish, yeah that would help but its of no use if his very own system doesnt support it

how to run memtest :-s no floopy drive :frowning:
any .exe that can be run using windows itself…any other app and stuff ? plsssssss help :frowning:

[OT] : @anish : simple fact in sig

@ deepak : i guess running at stocks should be best…dont wanna mod anything n stuff :frowning:

i guess running at stocks should be best…dont wanna mod anything n stuff

hmmm ok try option 1 then, lower the mem fsb to 166/333, see if that helps, sometimes the board and mem just dont get along at 400, especially with 2 sticks (like mine)

u have a CD writer and blank CD? that’s enough to run memtest, burn the ISO of memtest, and then check, both at 333 and 400 FSB

and btw, option 2 was there just for checking the RAM, u dont need to do a permanent on that

@deepak : but well the issue here is different…the RAM has been workin fine in the system from the past 4 odd months…however @ that time i did not install the OS with the ram in the system…which i did today and this problem came to light…so now im very

well, the RAM may have gotten bad since then or maybe u never accessed that address of RAM ever before…give reducing speeds and memtest a go, only then can one be sure

can i do the same off a ‘usb’ stick ?

a friend of mine’s system had the same problem. his hynix ram wouldnt allow Windows to be installed , and all sorts of errors. It was solved for a while by reducing it from DDR 400 to DDR 333. Even then, the RAM died after a few months . Get it replaced ASAP

@greenhorn : ouch!..seems same here…all works fine but wont allow to install windows…and its ‘NOT’ in warranty :(…and the fact that it might die out soon doesnt make me too happy :(…anyone on TE wants it :stuck_out_tongue: lol…jokes apart…lemme run a few tests on it and see wassup with it.

if your PC supports booting of a USB stick u cld give it a try, altho m not sure how you wld write the memtest bootsector on it? get someone to make a cd for u na

hunted for a RW cd …will torture my old writer somewhere to write on it

^^ do let us kno the end result

er brand and chip name of the RAM stick added and the original RAM stick isn’t mentioned , so if the two chips are different i doubt if they will run in tandem at 400mhz.

This is assuming the Chips are different, if they are the same there shouldn’t be a problem, anyways like the others said just reduce the clock , should become A-ok then…

they are running at 400Mhz and what u r referring too is dual channel which is a different thing altogether

note : running them in NON - DUAL CHANNEL.

NOW , the PC doesnt even BOOT off that ram …loads till the boot up screen and then gives memory reference error and stops …

and if the same ram is used in other slot of the board…it gives BSOD right away during Windows XP booting screen…

bottom line - busted ?

yep, seems like it…BAD Luck Mate

oh and maybe the RAM slor is loose, check that

and yeah clean the RAM pins by a clean cloth and then try (what the heck rite)

not a problem of the ram slot man …as i said earlier…doesnt boot with that ram however boots fine with the other ram in the same slot !..

cleaned and even used the “eraser” scrub method…fails…:frowning:

well…so busted RAM now eh

try/test the RAM (you r thinking bad) ALONE with normal setup with default BIOS settings. Specially no OC.
